CRAIG HAMANN: In My Best Friend’s Birthday, the character Clarence was inadvertently getting Mickey into one mess after another. This is based loosely on QT’s and my friendship. At that time, we were best friends. But Quentin could always find a way to mess things up for me. For example, Quentin had a habit of calling me late at night every time his car broke down, and no matter what kind of car he had, it always broke down. I’d have to go pick him up, and then he’d spend the night at my house. Well, I might have an acting audition or even a part on a TV show early the next morning, so I would need my sleep. But he’d call. I’d feel sorry for him and go pick him up. The next day I would be on the sound stage of some soap, where I was playing some role for a week, and I’d be half asleep. One time my car broke down on the way to pick him up after his car broke down. Things like that would always happen.
